As a Chiropractor, I see many people on Mondays that just say that their back went out over the weekend. It turns out that many people just plain overdo it.
Many people sit at a desk all week and then try to do too much on a weekend. Their muscles have formed habits from sitting and they can handle sitting. However, they are not as strong or as flexible as they need to be to do the extra play, yard work, painting, or any of the other projects that we try to tackle on the weekend.
I hear people say that I just needed to pull the weeds. I find out that they spend 3-6 hours pulling weeds. That is a really long time to be pulling weeds, especially for someone who does not do yard work or manual work often. I discuss the fact that most people would not go out and run a marathon without training for it. Many marathoners take 3.5-5.5 hours to do a marathon after months of training, so why do we feel we can go do something that we have not trained for without expecting some pains?
In our office, we treat the aches, pains, sprains and strains with various techniques such as physical therapy, Chiropractic adjustments to realign the joints of the body, or medically if medication is needed. We work on making the body more flexible and the muscles stronger to prevent the feeling of the back going out easily. The increased flexibility leads to fewer joint sprains and the increased muscle tone leads to less muscle strains.
