Our office is all about solving problems. We are an evidence-based practice and where we see a need, we try to find a solution.
Research is now showing that your genes may play a bigger role in your predisposition to certain conditions than was previously known. Cardiovascular disease, depression, miscarriages, ADD/ADHD, Alzheimer’s, hyperthyroidism, bipolar disorder, and many other conditions are very closely correlated with a genetic mutation in the MTHFR gene.
This discovery is HUGE! One out of every TWO people is thought to have a mutation of the MTHFR gene. There are two known mutations within this gene:
1. Mutation 677 C>T is commonly associated with cardiovascular disease including heart attack, stroke and blood clots; as well as peripheral neuropathy, miscarriages, neural tube defects (spina bifida) and other congenital birth defects.
2. Mutation 1298 A>C is most commonly associated with chronic disease, e.g. depression, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, IBS, Dementia, OCD, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, and more. mutation
In our office, we test for both of these mutations with a simple blood test for a genetic mutation in the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene. If we determine that you have either of these gene mutations, the solution is simply to start you on a Methylated-B vitamin. This simple fix can mean a big improvement in quality of life!
Since this mutation affects half of the population, we recommend the test for all of our patients; however, we believe it is especially important to test patients who may be considering getting pregnant, have a history of cardiovascular disease, depression, or any of the conditions listed above.
This test is not covered by insurance but it only costs $139.00 to get tested. Please feel free to contact our office at 865-691-3155 if you have any questions or check out http://mthfr.net/ for more information.
