When a Headache isn’t Just a Headache

Maybe this is your first headache or perhaps you suffer with chronic migraines and cannot seem to find relief. There are several treatment modalities you should consider to get maximum relief in the shortest period of time.
We see people daily for headaches ranging from stress/tension induced, chronic migraines, hormone-related headaches/migraines, and headaches that are not being treated by traditional medicine. The good news: we have successfully helped treat these headache sufferers for the past 30 years with very positive results. The bad news: many wait far too long to see us and waste valuable time and money on things that do not help at all.

According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, Headaches are the most common pain condition, and account for losing an average of 4.6 hours per week of productive work time. The Migraine Research Foundation is shining light on this disabling neurologic disease stating that migraines are in the top 20 for the world’s most disabling medical illnesses affecting over 10% of the population including children.

Treatment Options
According to Mayo Clinic, spinal manipulation can be one of the most effective ways to treat headaches. In addition to spinal manipulation, we have found trigger point injections and dry needling to be effective for many patients in relieving headaches. Some patients have also found that these alternative therapies along with some topical compounded headache formulas have provided more relief without the sedating side effects of traditional medications.

When should you go to the Emergency Room or your Neurologist before seeking alternative therapies from us at Apple? These are called “Red Flags”:
“Thunderclap Headache” – very severe headache that reaches its maximum severity immediately (in minutes). Thunderclap headaches require emergent medical evaluation.
Positional Headache – headache that substantially changes in intensity in association with changes in position – standing from lying or vice-versa.
Headaches Initiated by Exertion – headache starting while coughing, sneezing, and/or straining.
Substantial Change in Headache Pattern – significant increase in headache frequency or significant change in headache characteristics
• Worrisome Neurologic Symptoms – about 1/3 of people with migraine have neurologic symptoms (“migraine aura”) that typically precede onset of a migraine headache. If these symptoms have immediate onset (as opposed to a slow progression), last longer than 60 minutes, or do not completely resolve, medical attention is required.
• Systemic symptoms – including fever, chills, weight loss, night sweats, weakness of one side of the body, change in level of consciousness, or significant difficulty walking.
