Sinus infections (or sinusitis) is an inflammation of the nasal sinuses. It is usually caused by infection (bacterial or viral), but can also be caused by allergic reactions or other responses to environmental agents.

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Raspy voice
  • Pus-like nasal discharge
  • Lose of sense of smell
  • Facial pain or headache that is sometimes aggravated by bending over
  • A dull ache or pressure across the midface, especially between or deep into the eyes
  • A headache that occurs daily for weeks at a time, and is often noticeably worse in the morning and with head movement
  • Nasal congestion
  • Postnasal drip

Causes:

  • Infection (such as cold or upper respiratory tract infection) spreading to the sinuses from the nose
  • Allergies: dust, pollen, indoor pollutants, cigarette smoke, as well as outdoor pollutants which can induce inflammation
  • Excessive dryness in homes and offices from dry-air heating and air-conditioning systems
  • Narrow drainage passages, nasal obstructions (such as tumors, polyps, or a deviated septum)

Diagnosis:
A provider’s examination, Trans-illumination (a bright flashlight pressed against the forehead or cheek), cat scan and endoscopic procedures, and predisposing factors help confirm or indicate underlying conditions that require treatment.

Treatment:

  • Therapy/Physical Therapy: sinus stimulation (using a TENS unit to massage electrical current into the sinuses), sinus massage, neck and shoulder massage, hair pulling for headaches, heat or ice to the face.
  • Medication: Antibiotics, saline sprays, and surgery if occurrence is more than three times a year.
  • Chiropractic manipulations
