Plantar fasciitis is a common podiatry condition that affects the foot arch and heel. You may have heard it mentioned when people talk about injuries to athletes, particularly basketball players.
This condition occurs when the plantar fascia, which is the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed. This can cause pain or stiffness in the foot arch or heel, since the plantar fascia connects the heel to the toes. Sometimes this pain can make it difficult to walk.
Some factors that may contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis include: sudden weight gain, obesity, prior foot arch problems, wearing footwear that has poor arch support and maintaining an active lifestyle. In particular it effects those who do a lot of long-distance running and basketball players, since they do a lot of jumping.
If you have plantar fasciitis, you may feel that pain is worse in the morning, after sitting or standing for a long period of time and after exercising, particularly if your exercise routine incorporates a lot of running.
